I thought it was interesting that Smith chose to focus on the characters she did. Duncan and Swan are wealthy and spoiled, but the city they live in is crumbling around them burned by the twin flames of dragons that ceaselessly circle the sky. The Sky is Yours focuses on a former reality star, Duncan Humphrey Ripple V and his new wife Baroness Swan Lenore Dahlberg and Abby, a wild girl who Duncan met after he crashed in a garbage dump. Interestingly the author seems to have written them purposefully that way, comparing them in an interview to the characters in The Magicians series, which we had noted in the book discussion group here at the library are quite a contemptible bunch. The Sky is Yours is a very creative and beautiful written story with characters that I found myself disliking intensely. Check them out and see what you think!įans of Margaret Atwood’s dystopian post-apocalyptic works such as Oryx and Crake and The Heart Goes Lastshould enjoy The Sky is Yours. Two of my recent speculative fiction reads both focused on people I found myself disliking despite enjoying the books.

The zeitgeist was very like Athens during the trial of Socrates: when the country and its institutions are grappling with war-induced trauma and the future is so uncertain, why rock the boat by stirring up the young folks? At the time, however, the argument gelled around a confluence of fear that American institutions, the preservation of which much blood had been spilled in World War II and the Korean War being fought at the time, were under attack. It is a controversy alive and well today, though differently clothed and with many more variables on the table. How bad was it? Such was the frenzy that it may have affected the outcome of an American presidential race, costing Senator Estes Kefauver a shot at the title and leaving a young Jack Kennedy open for a run. You would think that protests against American institutions wouldn't be fought in trenches lined with pages from a four-color printing press, or that superheroes at one time represented the greatest threat to America as a country since Paul Revere and his horse let us know the redcoats were on their way. What they’re dreaming about as they run, whimper, bark, and growl in their sleep? Who or what they’re playing with when they romp around all by themselves? Are they still here watching over us – helping, perhaps even snuggling with us like they used to? What if they wrote and sent you a story from the great beyond? This Dog’s Afterlife answers those questions.
